U.S. HISTORY--COLONIAL ERA


(When U.S. History Portfolio 1 is assigned, the following books will be useful)  Do not neglect material from periodicals.  JStor, ProQuest, and Project Muse are excellent resources.  They are available by clicking on Online Resources, or entering their titles in the Library's Site Search (see above)  To search these resources from home, request password and instructions from the librarian.  All Upper School students have received copies of these in the last school mailing.  See Leisler, below for example.

Anne Hutchinson:

Anne Marbury Hutchinson An appraisal of her life and its meaning by one of her descendants; a good source, but not unbiased, for discovering her 'crimes'.

Popé:
    Note: Little is known of his life; no full-length biography as been published.  He is the nominal leader of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, the first, last, and only successful revolt of Indians against European invasion.   The European Challenge cited above provides a chapter on "The Plight of the Pueblos" in which Popé and his revolt is discussed.   See additional books on reserve

    A PBS site with a short summary of the life of the Tewa Pueblo leader.

    Couriers of the 1680 Revolt 
    A selection from a book, Indian Running, Native American Tradition, suggesting how this Revolt, though short-lived, may be viewed as a victory.

    Indians Confront the Spanish
    A short history of Spanish/Indian interactions from the beginning to the defeat of the Revolt, which provides some context for the Revolt, and for the less draconian treatment of the Indians after the Spanish re-established control.
