Frequently Asked Questions

Library Hours:  Monday through Thursday, 7:45AM - 5:00PM, and Friday, 7:45 AM - 4:30PM

If we wanted to use a sponsored site, like Encarta Online, what password would we use?

We do not subscribe to Encarta, however we have other, excellent online reference resources.  Britannica.com and Oxford Reference Online are superior, impeccable sources in which to find information for research reports.  You can find them on our Online Resources page.  To access these at home, passwords can be obtained through the secure community.brynmawrschool.org site.

Reminders:

Do not log on as yourself on the PC's - not a new policy, but a reminder of the old one

The PC's in the front of the library are the Online Public Access Catalog.  When you log on as yourself, the Catalog cannot be re-accessed.  The computer must be shut down and restarted by a librarian.  Signs forbidding such use are posted.  If you log into the OPAC, you will be given an automatic detention.    When you log in, you can be identified later.  Don't risk detentions. Instead, please use the Macs in the back of the library or the stand-alone PC  to access your account.

Overdue Books:

Books that are one week late will receive an overdue notice. Books that are two weeks late will receive a second notice. If the book is still not returned, a letter will be sent home with a date by which the book must be returned to avoid being billed. If the book is not returned by that date, a your account will be billed for the cost of replacing the book. If a student returns the book after receiving a bill, she will get credit for the full price of the book MINUS $2 FOR EACH BOOK PROCESSED.  For example, if a student returns two books; one of which is $25 and the other is $15, then the credit she receives will be $23 and $13, or a total of $36. If a student does not return a book, she will be billed the entire price of the book.

What are the Group Study Rooms?
These rooms are available for student use, for lectures to small groups, and for meetings.  Use must be reserved; a notebook for reserving space is located at the Circulation Desk.  Persons involved in group study projects are given preference.  Note: Rooms have been insulated and sound-proofed, but loud noises will still penetrate the walls.

Where are the Gilman yearbooks?

The Gilman yearbooks are now located in the Dean of Students' office.  They are available to Upper School students only.  See next question for possible reasons for the move.

Why do we have to be quiet in the Library?
The Library is the only place on campus designated as a quiet zone.  At the request of students it is kept as quiet as possible to insure that there is one place where peace and tranquility can be found.   The Library Staff will enforce quiet rules, but it is far preferable that students utilize self-control.

When is the library open?

Monday - Thursday 7:45AM - 5:00PM, Friday 7:45AM - 4:30PM

How many books may I check out?

There is no limit on the number of books you can check out, unless you have woefully abused library privileges.

May I check out videos, music CDs, magazines, and CD-ROMs?

Yes, see below for lending periods

How long may I keep library materials?

Regular circulating books and audio books: 28 days
Reference books: Overnight, cannot be checked out until 2:30PM, and must be returned by 8:00 AM the next school day
Reserve books: Overnight, cannot be checked out until 2:30PM, and must be returned by 8:00 AM the next school day
    Music CDs:  5 days
    CD-ROMs: 5 days
    Videos: 5 days
    Magazines:  14 days

What is a reference book?

Encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, and critical surveys are examples of books that can be found in the reference section.   Reference books are shelved in the short stacks in front of the main library collection and adjacent to the reading room tables.  Reference books may be checked out after 3:00 PM, but they must be returned by 8:00 AM the next school day.  This is a privilege students at other schools do not enjoy; if materials are not returned, this advantage could disappear.

What is a reserve book?

Teachers will often place certain materials on reserve for a project.  Typically a project topic is shared by two or more students or even a whole class. To prevent one student from checking out all of the relevant books, and to give all students an equal chance,  books (and sometimes articles or chapters from books, or videos) are placed on reserve.  Once the project is over, the materials are returned to their normal places in the stacks.  Reserve books can be found on the tall beige metal shelves across from the circulation desk.  Reserve books may be checked out after 2:30 PM, but they must be returned by 8:00 AM the next school day.

What are the librarian's names?
Mrs. Rickert-Wilbur, Ms. Tuttle, Mrs. Batts, and the archivist is Mrs. Di Cataldo.

How many computers do you have?
Six Windows NT machines for catalog and internet access (the OPAC, Online Public Access Catalog), located in the front of the library adjacent to the Reference area study tables
Six Macintosh NT machines for internet access and word processing and e-mail, located in the rear of the Library
One Windows 95/98 machines for CD-ROMS and word processing, located on the wall shelf near the Reference study tables

What is a "Pathfinder"?
A Pathfinder is a guide to a specific topic or a particular classroom project. It always contains several relevant websites, and often short bibliographies of books.  It is created on demand from students, faculty, library staff, or general need, i.e., election sites during an election season.  All Library Pathfinders are available from the Library's Virtual Internet Library.  Those in current use are labeled.

Where can I ...
    Watch a video?
The Library has TV/VCR combos that can be used in the Group Study Rooms, or in a pinch from any outlet with earphones.  Ask for service at the Circulation Desk.

The Library has computers pre-programmed for Windows CD-ROMS  and Mac CD-ROMS.  Ask for CD-Roms at the Circulation Desk; they are all cataloged in the OPAC.  CD-ROMs may also be checked out for use at home.
     Scan images?
A Scanner is available next to the stand alone PC computer.  Instructions are next to the scanner.

A color printer is available from the six OPAC computers in the front of the Library.  Choose Print, then HP4650 Printer.  Copies will print in the Library workroom.  Ask a staff member to retrieve your copies.  Please reset printer when you are finished.

A Xerox machine (which copies both sides and offers reduction copying) is available in the rear of the Library to the right of the main aisle.   Cost is $.10 per copy.  Machine gives change for coins; ask for change for bills at circulation desk.
